About the Award

A founding grassroots group of Winter Wildlands Alliance, Snowlands Network inspires individuals to protect America’s wild snowscapes in California and Nevada, and to have a voice in the decision making process for winter recreation on public lands.

The Snowlands Network Environmental Storytelling Award will be presented to the 22st Annual Backcountry Film Festival film selection that most effectively combines compelling winter storytelling with a clear environmental message. This theme may focus on the natural environment itself — such as climate impacts, wildlife, or snowpack changes — or on active advocacy efforts to protect these fragile ecosystems and the public lands that host them.

Selection Criteria

• Environmental Integration: The film seamlessly weaves a clear, compelling environmental message into its narrative — whether through personal storytelling, advocacy, or ecosystem exploration.
• Relevance to Winter: The story is rooted in winter — focusing on snowpack, wildlife, snowy public lands, climate impacts, or human-powered winter recreation.
• Storytelling Excellence: The film uses powerful visuals, narrative, and structure to engage the viewer and spark emotional or intellectual connection.
• Call to Action: The film fosters awareness and inspires audiences to care, engage, or take meaningful steps toward conservation or advocacy.
• Youth Engagement (bonus consideration): Films that inspire young people to connect with and defend the winter environment will be given particular consideration.
